Osteoarthritis and chronic pain, what are the latest research findings?

Staggering figures released earlier this year revealed that over 70% of people with arthritis are living in constant pain.
Advice for people with osteoarthritis has changed dramatically over the last few years, mainly due to researchers discovering that exercise where possible, can make a fundamental difference to the progression of disease, levels of pain and quality of life. It doesn’t mean running around the block… just do as much as you can manage as often as you can. Try to build a little more activity into your daily routine as even very small amounts can begin to make a big difference.
A very recent study showed that in-hospital exercise programmes can reduce fatigue and stiffness and improve balance in people with arthritis. The types of exercise studied were gentle forms such as tai chi, pilates and yoga. Swimming is a particularly useful form of activity – many people with arthritis enjoy the weightlessness it offers, the way that it strengthens muscles… and a well-deserved cup of coffee with friends afterwards.
