Awards looking for ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the healthcare sector
People across Britain can now honour colleagues, friends and neighbours who do extraordinary things by nominating them for a new national award. The British Citizen Awards were launched in January this year to honour the incredible accomplishments of individuals in society who positively impact their communities. The awards happen twice a year, and recognise everyday people whose achievements may otherwise be overlooked.
The deadline for nominations is 30 October 2015, and the next round of medal presentations will take place in January 2016, at the Palace of Westminster.
Previous medallists have come from all walks of life and span all generations, with the youngest aged just 16 years and the oldest aged 100 years. Their moving stories include:
• A 22-year-old woman from Carlisle who has raised more than £22,000 for charity despite fighting a debilitating, life-limiting illness;
• A Dorset woman who, since the sudden death of her six-week-old daughter, has campaigned tirelessly for better infant bereavement support and education;
• A 16-year-old girl who raises money for a children’s charity after being subject to bullying for seven years;
• A 100-year-old London man who has fought for social justice for others his entire life;
• A police officer who dedicates his spare time to protecting the elderly from deception crimes.
“There are literally thousands of people across the UK making life better for others, and until now with no formal recognition open to them,” explains Mike Faulkner, co-founder of the awards. “This programme, which many see as an alternative Honours system, has been created to enable every individual across the country to nominate someone who they feel deserves to be recognised. We have nothing but respect for the Honours system but believe that a more accessible recognition programme is long overdue.”
