Soy milk could reduce knee arthritis symptoms
Drinking soy milk may help reduce osteoarthritis says research in Rheumatology International.
Scientists looked at the relationship between soy milk intake and two indicators of osteoarthritis: radiographic knee joint space narrowing and osteophytes.
A total of 5,764 people were included in the study. They filled out questionnaires about how much soy milk they drank and the researchers assessed each person’s radiographic knee joint space narrowing and levels osteophytes.
Variables such as age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes and intake of other dairy products were taken into account.
A “significant inverse association between soy milk intake and osteophytes” was revealed but the same wasn’t found for radiographic knee joint space narrowing.
The researchers comment:
“As far as we know, this is the first study that showed an association between dietary soy milk intake and knee osteophytes.”
