Statins do not seem to increase hand osteoarthritis experts reveal

Starting to take statins does not appear to heighten the incidence of hand osteoarthritis, says a large study in Arthritis Care & Research.

Statins are a group of medicines commonly prescribed to help lower cholesterol levels. A research team looked to investigate the association between statin therapy initiation and incident hand osteoarthritis. They looked at data from 233,608 people starting statins and compared them to the same number of people who were not starting statins.

Over the course of 5.5 years, the team found that starting statins had no influence on if people developed hand osteoarthritis. The group comments:

“There was no association between statin initiation and incident hand osteoarthritis in this study.”
