People with osteoporosis at no higher risk of coeliac disease says new review
Earlier studies have produced varying risk estimates for the prevalence of coeliac disease in osteoporosis but the latest findings suggest there is no greater risk after all, experts report in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics.
A review of the evidence identified eight relevant studies involving data from nearly 3,200 people with osteoporosis. Of these, 62 people (1.6%) had coeliac disease, which is comparable to that in the general population.
“These findings argue against routinely screening patients with osteoporosis for coeliac disease, which is contrary to current guideline recommendations,” the authors conclude. “Additional studies are needed to determine the true utility of such screening programs.”
