Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of some men developing rheumatoid arthritis
Following a Mediterranean diet may lower the chances of some people developing rheumatoid arthritis, according to a new study in Arthritis Research & Therapy.
The Mediterranean diet has been associated with lower risk of heart disease and cancer but until now only one study has looked into its impact on rheumatoid arthritis risk and it found no association.
Now new research looked at 1,721 people (average age 53 years old) with rheumatoid arthritis and compared them to 3,667 people of similar age and gender and from the same area.
They found that the more that some people stuck to the Mediterranean diet, they less likely they were to develop rheumatoid arthritis. But this was only found in men who had seropositive rheumatoid arthritis; no significant association was found among women.
