Exergaming improves quality of life and decreases pain in fibromyalgia researchers report
Exergaming – using video games that are also a form of exercise – could play an important part in managing symptoms for fibromyalgia, researchers report in the Games For Health Journal.
The group looked at the effects of a 24-week exergame-based programme on health-related quality of life and pain in 55 women with fibromyalgia. The volunteers were split, so 28 women completed 24 weeks of exergames (two sessions of 60 minutes per week) that focused on mobility, postural control, upper and lower limb coordination, aerobic fitness and strength. The remaining women were in a control group.
“Significant effects on the perceived health status and pain intensity were found,” the researchers highlight. “Exergames could be a useful tool to improve perceived health status and pain intensity level in women with fibromyalgia with a reduced health-related quality of life.”
