Stomach infection with Helicobacter pylori may be associated with osteoporosis
“Our meta-analysis showed that H. pylori infection was significantly associated with the risk of osteoporosis,” concludes the team that reviewed the evidence. “The bone health of H. pylori-positive patients deserves more attention.”
What is H. pylori
H pylori is a bacteria that can enter your body and live in your digestive tract. Infection with H. pylori is common; about two-thirds of the world’s population has it in their bodies but most people are never affected by it. It can cause ulcers although medicines can kill the bacteria and help ulcers heal.
How could H. pylori affect bone health?
Chronic gastritis due to H. pylori infection could lead to decreased bone mineral density, which makes osteoporosis more likely. However, some experts suggest that chronic inflammation may be involved in the relationship between H. pylori and osteoporosis. Either way, it’s an interesting new research avenue into the bone-thinning condition.
