Rheumatoid arthritis biologic drugs benefit bones
Biologics – state of the art drugs used in rheumatoid arthritis when other medication has not reduced symptoms – seem to improve osteoporosis too.
Osteoporosis is a medical condition that gradually weakens bones, leaving them prone to fracture.
We know that osteoporosis is more common in people with rheumatoid arthritis than in the general population. This is because of the effects of inflammation, autoantibodies, metabolic disorders, drugs, and decreased physical activity. So active treatment for inflammation can help prevent osteoporosis.
Biologic drugs have been found to reduce inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis, inhibit bone resorption and promote bone formation.
“Several studies have reported positive results of biologics in improving bone mineral density with changes in the bone turnover marker profile,” the research group says. “However, the effects of these treatments on bone remain largely unknown. Further studies should be conducted.
