Arthritis often goes undetected in people with psoriasis
Up to 15% of people with psoriasis have undiagnosed arthritis that’s related to the skin condition, according to a new review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. And that’s despite the fact that skin psoriasis comes before the onset of psoriatic arthritis in 84% of people with psoriasis.
A research group wanted to determine how many people with psoriasis had undiagnosed psoriatic arthritis, so did an extensive research of the evidence. The finding that around 15% of people with psoriasis may have undiagnosed arthritis related to the skin condition suggests that dermatologists have a crucial role in screening people with psoriasis psoriatic arthritis, according to the team:
“The high prevalence of undiagnosed psoriatic arthritis in patients with psoriasis adds to the recommendation that dermatologists need to screen all patients with psoriasis for psoriatic arthritis.”
