Key genetic link discovered between chronic pain conditions

A link has been found between four common chronic pain syndromes, suggesting that some people may be genetically predisposed to them, says research published in Pain.
By studying identical and non-identical twins (8,000 pairs altogether), the UK research team found that musculoskeletal pain, pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and dry eye disease may have shared genetic pathways. Continue reading

Bedtime back pain preventing a good night’s sleep for almost half of Brits

The link between back pain experienced at night and beds is being overlooked, says research from the British Chiropractic Association and Sealy (the world’s biggest bed company), even though neck or back pain has prevented nearly half of people from sleeping.

Despite 43% of 2,000 people surveyed saying that sleeping can cause them to suffer from neck or back pain, 61% do not think that their sleeping position is important for their back or neck health. Continue reading

Chronic pain affects sleep of the other half

 

A study that analysed relationships in which one spouse has chronic knee pain has found that the quality of sleep of the other spouse can be badly affected.

Scientists interviewed 138 people (aged at least 50 years old) with knee osteoarthritis and their spouses and asked them to keep a diary for 22 days. Continue reading

Poor sleep for partners of people with arthritis

 

People with osteoarthritis can prevent their partners from getting a good night’s sleep, says new research published in Pain.

Scientists recruited 145 couples in which one of each pair had osteoarthritis and moderate or high-intensity pain. They recorded pain levels, sleep quality and how rested they felt for 22 nights in a row. Continue reading
