Rheumatology services across the UK under huge pressure outlines new report
The major challenges facing rheumatology services and the patients they serve are captured in a new report from the British Society for Rheumatology, along with a raft of measures to address them at a national and local level.
Over 2,000 members of the British Society for Rheumatology were surveyed, a diverse range of healthcare professionals including rheumatologists, nurses, allied health professionals and GPs. And a series of focus groups ensured the voices of clinicians and patients were heard too. Continue reading
Vitamin D can reduce osteoarthritis symptoms in overweight people
Overweight people have improvement in osteoarthritis symptoms if they increase their vitamin D intake, says new research in the Clinical Journal of Pain.
Experts analysed blood samples for vitamin D levels from a group of 256 middle-aged and older adults. The volunteers reported on their levels of knee osteoarthritis pain and completed tasks to assess their balance, walking and rising from sitting to standing. Continue reading

Overweight people who are due to have joint replacement surgery could benefit from weight loss treatment beforehand, according to research presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. And bariatric surgery may be a cost-effective option to consider.

Arthritis pain is predicted by diabetes, previous joint pain and overall physical health – but not obesity
Diabetes, previous joint pain and a person’s overall physical health status may predict arthritis pain with nearly complete accuracy, experts report at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The team involved wanted to determine factors and patterns that contribute to pain for a national representative sample of 5,721 US adults with arthritis (average age was 60 years). Continue reading
