Diabetes confirmed as a risk factor for worsening of knee osteoarthritis
Diabetes should be considered a risk factor for the progression of knee osteoarthritis, says research published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.
French and UK experts looked at 559 people older than 50 years with knee osteoarthritis. Interviews showed which of the volunteers had diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Measures of knee cartilage were made by X-ray every year for three years and the experts accounted for age, body mass index, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
They found that joint space reduction rates were more for people with type 2 diabetes. And more analysis revealed that type 2 diabetes predicted arthritis progression in men but not women.
