Eat well to reduce arthritis symptoms: inflammation and pain

Mediterranean diet, rheumatoid arthritis diet, inflammation diet, arthritis food, arthritis dietEmerging research highlights the role of certain nutrients in combating inflammation and pain, offering new hope for arthritis patients seeking additional symptom relief.
A growing body of evidence links certain nutrients from the diet to inflammation. It’s an important field as treatment dissatisfaction in people with rheumatic disease is high. Although drugs today are much better than the past, they don’t work for everyone and people are affected by side effects.
Additional ways of reducing symptoms are helpful… and diet is an exciting area. Here’s what we know so far, according to a new review in Nutrition Journal:
1. Some nutrients improve pain associated with inflammation especially omega-3 fatty acid which is found in olive oil and fish. Omega-6 – obtained from corn and soybean oil – is also important but must not be consumed in high quantities.
2. The Mediterranean diet can lower pain in people with rheumatic disease. This means plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole cereals. Go for low consumption of dairy products, meats, poultry, and moderate consumption of alcohol with meals.
3. Maintaining a low body mass is associated with improved pain associated with chronic rheumatic diseases.
“There is a strong interest in dietary interventions,” the research group says. “Patient willingness to change diet to reduce disease activity is high.”
