Fibromyalgia is a cause of uncontrolled asthma – recent research
Fibromyalgia may be a risk factor for uncontrolled asthma in people with both asthma and fibromyalgia, a small study reveals in Current Medical Research and Opinion.
A total of 56 women with asthma and fibromyalgia were matched to 36 people with asthma who did not have fibromyalgia.
People in both groups had similar levels of asthma and use of anti-asthmatic drugs, but those who also had fibromyalgia group showed lower scores in the Asthma Control Test and quality of life measures, as well as higher scores of hyperventilation, anxiety and depression.
The research team concludes:
“Fibromyalgia in patients with asthma influences the poor control of the respiratory disease and is associated with altered perception of dyspnea, hyperventilation syndrome, high prevalence of depression and anxiety, and impaired quality of life.”
