Glucosamine back in the limelight – new research findings
Glucosamine is centre stage again… and this time experts have combined it with tiny particles called buckyballs and found that it might help to reduce cell damage and inflammation after stroke.
Scientists from Germany have discovered that the combination of two substances helps to lower inflammation and the brain volume affected after a stroke:
* Glucosamine (an amino sugar commonly used to treat arthritis and arthrosis);
* Buckyballs (minute spherical structures formed by carbon atoms).
The buckyballs protect the nerve cells and the glucosamine brings down the inflammation. It seems to be a winning combination as successful lab experiments suggest that new drugs could follow, the researchers report in Experimental Neurology.
We recently reported on a study that found that glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate reduces pain and swelling of knee osteoarthritis. Experts found that glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate was comparable with the drug celecoxib (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug [NSAID]) in terms of relieving pain and reducing joint swelling of knee osteoarthritis.
