Healthy diet may improve measures of disease activity in psoriatic arthritis

psoriatic arthritis, diet, PSA treatment, arthritis digest magazineChoose low sugar options and eat plenty of fruit if you have psoriatic arthritis, experts suggest, after finding that a healthy diet seems to reduce disease activity.

Experts looked at if a Mediterranean diet or low calorie diet, along with standard drug treatments, can improve health of people with psoriatic arthritis who are overweight or obese. They found that:

  • Less added sugar correlated with lower tiredness and disease activity scores;
  • More whole fruit consumption corresponded with lower swollen joint counts;
  • Eating less unsaturated and saturated fatty acids was associated with lower inflammation in connective tissue between tendon or ligament and bone.

Dr Lihi Eder, who led the work, comments that “we found a significant correlation between certain food groups and measures of disease activity”.
