Hip – but not wrist – fracture more common in women with gout
A history of gout seems to be associated with an increased risk of hip fracture says new research in Arthritis & Rheumatology. The same isn’t true for wrist fracture.
Experts looked at gout and the risk of wrist and hip fracture in 103,799 women. There was 14 years’ of follow-up for the wrist fracture analysis and 22 years’ of follow-up for the hip fracture analysis.
In women with gout, there were 107 wrist fractures and 117 hip fractures but evaluation of the data showed that only the hip fracture statistic was significant.
“A history of gout is associated with a modestly increased risk of hip fracture but not significantly associated with risk of wrist fracture in women,” the research group concludes.
