Lupus leads to higher fracture risk, says new study

People with lupus could be more likely to experience clinical fractures, says research published in Osteoporosis International.

A total of 4,343 people with lupus were compared with a group of healthy people and monitored for over six years.

Results showed that those with lupus had a 1.2-fold increased risk of clinical fracture risk compared to the control group. The risk was higher in those who had been affected by lupus for longer. And people with lupus who had been treated with glucocorticoids experienced a further increase in fracture risk for the six months that followed.

The study adds to the growing picture of disease progression, outcomes and ways of treating the complicated condition.
