Mud, mud, glorious mud (for knee osteoarthritis)
Mud-pack therapy, balneotherapy, mud-bath therapy and spa therapy seem to reduce pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug consumption and functional limitation for people with knee osteoarthritis, and improve their quality of life.
A team looked at studies published between 2002 and 2017 about spa therapy, mud-pack therapy, balneotherapy and mud-bath therapy in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, and selected 12 that were of a high enough quality.
Reporting their findings in BioMed Research International, they concluded that:
“The mud-pack therapy, balneotherapy, mud-bath therapy, and spa therapy have proved to be effective in the treatment and in the secondary prevention of knee osteoarthritis, by reducing pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug consumption, and functional limitation and improving quality of life of affected patients.”
