Stem cell therapy for knee arthritis – what’s the verdict?
Stem cell injection for knee osteoarthritis is an emerging new therapy, but a group of experts who reviewed the research has found there isn’t good enough evidence that it works.
They looked at six studies, which seem to have promising patient reported and radiological outcomes and improved healing rates. No serious negative side effects occurred, but the research has a high level of bias, the experts report in The British Journal of Sports Medicine.
They conclude: “in the absence of high-level evidence, we do not recommend stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis”.
