Vitamin E – alpha-tocopherol – improves bone mineral density
Stock up on vitamin E rich foods after a study found that alpha-tocopherol (a type of vitamin E) can help maintain bone mineral density.
Experts looked at the relationship between eating various nutrients and bone mineral density in 157 women aged 38–76 years and published their findings in Nutrients. X-rays were used to measure bone mineral density and questionnaires assessed dietary habits.
No nutrient was correlated with bone mineral density in women who had been through menopause. But in younger women, daily intake of alpha-tocopherol was associated with better bone health.
“Increase in the intake of alpha-tocopherol could help maintain bone mass in pre-menopausal women,” the experts conclude.
Top sources of alpha-tocopherol include:
- Wheat germ oil
- Sunflower seeds
- Almonds
- Spinach (boiled)
- Broccoli (boiled)
- Kiwifruit
