Music reduces fibromyalgia pain suggests a pilot study
People with fibromyalgia should listen to a little Mozart for short-term pain relief after a small study of 23 women with fibromyalgia found the music lowers pain and improves functional connectivity.
The volunteers were asked to listen to Mozart’s Duo for Violin and Viola No. 1, K. 423, in a quiet room for 17 minutes. Experts looked at brain scans and recorded pain levels of the volunteers before and after they listened to the music.
Not only were pain scores lower after listening to music, but brain scans showed a difference in connectivity between vital areas of the brain before and after listening to music.
The experts conclude in Pain Medicine that “music intervention reduces persistent fibromyalgia pain and alters functional connectivity between the insula and default mode network.”
