Exercises before knee replacement surgery reduce time in hospital
Doing exercises before knee replacement surgery makes for a shorter hospital stay, says a new study in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics.
An extensive review of research looked at outcomes for people about to have a total knee replacement operation. The team compared those who did a preoperative exercise programme with those who didn’t. But they could only find five relevant studies because not much research has looked at self-reported function, stiffness and pain in this context.
However, the findings did relay that a preoperative exercise programme is associated with a decrease in length of hospital stay. More studies should focus on pain, stiffness and function of people who do an exercise programme versus those who don’t.
