Ginger to treat autoimmune disease

The important role ginger can play in controlling inflammation for people living with autoimmune diseases is revealed in a new study in JCI Insight. The research looked at the impact of ginger supplements on people’s white blood cell function.

When healthy people took a ginger supplement for seven days, their white blood cells became more resistant to fibrous networks that promote inflammation and clotting. Inflammation and clotting contribute to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases. Ginger therefore restrains this negative process.

“This is important because it is a natural supplement that may be helpful to treat inflammation and symptoms for people with several different autoimmune diseases,” comments Dr Kristen Demoruelle, who is involved in the work.

Dr Jason Knight explains further that the research “for the first time, provides evidence for the biological mechanism that underlies ginger’s apparent anti-inflammatory properties in people. There are not a lot of natural supplements, or prescription medications for that matter, that are known to fight overactive [white blood cells]. We, therefore, think ginger may have a real ability to complement treatment programs that are already underway.”
