Mouthwash containing essential oils and curcumin may decrease gum inflammation
A special mouthwash containing essential oils and curcumin seems to reduce disease activity of chronic periodontitis in people with rheumatoid arthritis, after scaling and root planing, says a small study from India.
Researchers split 45 women with rheumatoid arthritis and chronic periodontitis into three groups:
- Scaling and root planing with chlorhexidine mouthwash;
- Scaling and root planing with essential oils and curcumin mouthwash;
- Only scaling and root planing.
All of the groups enjoyed less periodontal and rheumatoid arthritis disease activity six weeks after the scaling and root planing. But the greatest decrease was seen in those who used the essential oils and curcumin mouthwash. People who used the chlorhexidine mouthwash had the next greatest reduction. The research team concludes:
“This study reveals that mouthwash containing essential oils and curcumin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing is effective in reducing the disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis and chronic periodontitis, thereby warranting the use of the same.”
